2023/24 International Biennial for paper Fibre Art-”EARTH SPEAK: Giving Voice to Paper”

For more than a decade, the International Biennial for Paper Fibre Art (IBPFA) has evolved into an important new forum for contemporary paper art. Founded and organized by Jan Fairbairn-Edwards with the Association Chaîne de Papier (originally in France) the Biennial is the result of a unique partnership with the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI).

Building on the success of subsequent exhibitions, the NTCRI carries the event into the next phase with Fairbairn-Edwards’ blessings: “The biennial was inspired by the strong traditions from different cultures all over the world and our goal has always been to bring together the traditional and modern by pushing the medium to the forefront of modern art practice.”

Keeping to its commitment of illuminating the strong connections between paper art and na-ture, while also cultivating environmental themes, this year’s exhibition EARTH SPEAK: Giving Voice to Paper represents artists from 18 countries. Curator Amy Richard worked closely with co-jurors Jan Fairbairn-Edwards and Jen-Kuan Yau (with the NTCRI) and Taiwan artist Wei-Lin Yang. As Richard describes, the exhibition is a “grateful acknowledgement to paper as a powerful creative medium and the artists who choose to work with it. We are quite excit-ed about the works, which collectively provide us with a greater understanding of what is at stake at this moment in time as we experience much larger natural forces throughout the globe.”

Reflecting the excitement about the exhibition, the NTCRI has organized the work to be exhib-ited in two venues in Taiwan, beginning with the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in the capital city of Taipei, from November 2-14. Soon after it will be moved to the NTCRI Craft Design Hall within the Taiwan’s Craft Culture Park in Caotun Township, Nantou County where it will be on view until March 31, 2024.
